Building Communication at Home: Visual Supports and AAC Basics

Communication is more than speech. Visual supports and AAC can help children express needs, reduce frustration, and participate more fully at home and school.

AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) includes picture boards, gestures, sign language, communication books, and apps. Start by observing moments of stress and selecting a few key words that matter most to your child.

Model, do not test. Show how to use visuals during everyday routines.

Place visuals where they are used: a morning schedule by the door, a choice board in the kitchen, a feelings chart near the bedtime routine. Give extra wait time and celebrate every attempt to communicate.

When therapists and teachers use the same symbols and words, children learn faster. Keep it simple, be consistent, and update the system as new needs and skills appear.
